Cabana’s Best of Brasil – Best Bars in Rio

You may find it hard not to find a bar in Rio: everywhere from road side watering holes to super glam rooftop bars are full of locals and tourists enjoying the Good Life. So we’ve whittled it down a bit and scoured Rio to bring you our favourite drinking spots.

We always head to Bar Astor, which occupies a prime spot in Ipanema, as soon as we arrive in the city, and it instantly makes us feel at home. It’s busy most nights of the week; the perfect spot for post-work beers, pre-dinners cocktails, or for simply grabbing an outside table and making a night of it. They make excellent Caipirinhas, or we tried our first “Sakeninha” there: a Caipirinha mixed with Sake, in homage to the country’s huge Japanese population (it’s the biggest outside of Japan). This “boteco” (a bar with snacks) has plenty on offer if you’re peckish too: try the bolinhos (fried rice balls) or casquinha de siri , a classic bar snack of grilled crab served in the shell. The best part is, it closes at 3 am, so there’s plenty of time to enjoy a caipirinha or three…

The hammocks on the ceiling are an instant indication of the relaxed vibe of this beloved city bar. It’s close to the Maracanã stadium, so sure to be heaving over the Summer, but it’s worth it for the atmosphere, the great bar snacks and the extensive range of bottled beers (no draft here). They’re particularly popular for their bolindhos de feijoada, small fried rice balls filled with Brasil’s famous pork and bean stew. Served alongside a mini caipirinha shot, they’re the perfect pick me up on a balmy Rio night.

Urca is a classic local haunt, located at the edge of the waterfront, overlooking a ramshackle harbour. Grab a beer from the non-descript bar and find a perch along the sea wall amidst the rest of the Cariocas (Rio locals). We also love their pastels (fried parcels of dough filled with cheese, beef or shrimp), and rightly so – they’re known for doing some of the best in town. There’s a more formal restaurant upstairs, but if you’ve come to soak up the atmosphere and enjoy the calming views over Guanabara Bay, it’s all about the bar!

Baretto Londra at Hotel Fasano

Rogeiro Fasano, owner of the eponymous (and swanky) Brasilian hotel chain, is an old friend of Cabana co-founder David, so it’s no wonder this is one of our favourite spots for a bit of Ipanema cool. But you don’t have to be “in the know” to see the allure of this fashionable spot: think trendy DJ’s, excellent cocktails, hot barmen and, of course, your requisite Brasilian glamour pusses. It’s a place to see and be seen: the people watching is top notch: but of course this comes at a price, so don’t leave without your wallet! If you’re lucky enough to stay in the hotel, make sure to check out the rooftop pool, which has outrageous views over Ipanema beach and mixes a mean Caju (cashew fruit) Caipirinha.

Copacabana Piano Bar

For a taste of grand old world glam, you can do no better than the Piano Bar of the Copacabana Palace Hotel. This dramatic, all white hotel has cemented itself as a Rio “icon,” almost as intrinsic to its skyline as Sugar Loaf Mountain or the Christ the Redeemer Statue, and has seen swarms of A-listers through its doors since they opened in the 20’s, from Rio and beyond. Step back in time and sip an aperitif in this old school bar next to the elegant pool. If you’re lucky, you’ll enjoy the sway of a Bossa Nova from the pianist tinkling the ivories on the hotel’s baby grand. And it doesn’t hurt that the hotel is steps away from the famous Copacabana Beach – perfect for a post-drink stroll.
