We’ve worked hard to make Cabana feel as true to Brasil as possible, and taken some pride in hunting down items that create just the right feel. There are so many good, grass-roots designs in Brasil, whether it’s the innovative approach to up-cycling – recycling so that the final product is better than the original – or the preservation of urban classics, that we want every Cabana to celebrate.
Years ago, the EU banned the traditional wooden shelves for drying cheese on dreaded Health & Safety grounds.
As manufacturers rushed to replace the tried and tested method with plastic shelving, some of the old boards made their way into the hands of Freddie Saul, furniture designer on the outskirts of Glastonbury. Freddie makes them into beautiful, unusual tables, inspired us to use them in our restaurant and, no, they don't smell of cheese.

The skies above the Rocinha favela were an unexpected source of inspiration for our St.Giles site.
When looking for a way to lower the restaurant’s ceiling, we remembered the wonderful scene that takes place whenever a breeze blows through this hillside community. The air is instantly filled with a kaleidoscope of multi-coloured kites, hotly pursued by little kids with vast spools of twine, battling for control of the skies. It's wonderfully uplifting to watch them weave their kites through the cables that criss-cross the city, and this ceiling is a constant reminder of that sight.

Grafica Fidalga is a printing company found in the outskirts of Sao Paulo.
It’s owned by Mauricio and Carlinhos, two men who have dedicated their lives to this unique, traditional craft. Their pride and joy is a glorious German letterpress imported in 1929, on which they have printed everything from the weekly Workers' Party paper, to fly-posters for the annual CARNAVAL. In recent years, the municipality has banned fly-posting, but these gentleman continue to produce beautiful, iconic prints for Brasil’s underground artists, handmaking every letter from eucalyptus wood. When they agreed to print posters to decorate both the Westfield and St Giles Cabanas, we were understandably overjoyed! Come see the results for yourself.

The rather distinctive recycled denim banquettes in Cabana are the work of Recicla Jeans.
Established in 2003 in Sao Paulo’s Paraisopolis favela, the organisation gives women in this impoverished community a safe place in which to earn a much needed income. Some of their beautiful creations have even made it onto the world fashion stage, for designers including the Brasilian Alexandre Herchcovitch. The organisation now educates 850 people in a variety of programmes, championing the creativity which abounds in the community. We're incredibly happy to be working with such an inspirational organisation.
